Tours to the Joint Security Area (JSA), also known as Panmunjom, in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) remain indefinitely suspended for the general public, with no confirmed reopening date, due to heightened security risks following a 2023 defection incident.
The suspension began on July 18, 2023, after U.S. Army Pvt. Travis King, a 23-year-old cavalry scout facing assault charges in South Korea, defected during a civilian tour. Released from South Korean custody, King skipped his flight home, joined a JSA tour in civilian clothes, and sprinted across the Military Demarcation Line into North Korea at 3:27 PM KST amid a group of 40 tourists.
North Korea detained King until September 27, 2023, releasing him via Sweden and China. He claimed disillusionment with U.S. society, citing racial discrimination and mistreatment in the Army. In September 2024, King received a one-year confinement sentence (time served) and dishonorable discharge. No public interviews with him exist.
The United Nations Command immediately halted all JSA tours. Partial resumptions for select groups (e.g., military personnel, diplomats, or special policy visitors) have occurred since late 2023, but access remains severely limited. The general public cannot book any JSA tours. Non-JSA DMZ tours continue unaffected, attracting over 1.2 million visitors annually.
Update – March 2026: As one of only two tour operators in partnership with the Unification Village’s JSA Museum, we now offer exclusive access to the JSA Experience Museum, an interactive museum focused on the Joint Security Area and the Korean War. The museum has been included in our 3rd Tunnel DMZ tours since March 2026.
