About the tour
Don’t say you’ve been to Korea if you haven’t taken a tour to the DMZ! It is by far the number 1 experience for anyone visiting the peninsula and a must for any bucket list. The Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) was established in 1953 via an armistice (no peace treaty exists), so North and South Korea still technically remain at war.
During your tour, you will have the opportunity to walk through the third tunnel of aggression dug by North Korea and avoid approximately 2 million landmines buried across the 250-kilometer-long no-man’s land. At Dora Observatory, weather permitting, we can look straight across the barbed-wire divide into mysterious North Korea and throughout the day keep an eye out for various wildlife species (up to 6,168), including 38% of Korea’s endangered ones, as the absence of people within the DMZ has created a biodiversity hotspot.
Former US president Bill Clinton dubbed the DMZ “the scariest place on Earth”, yet The Guardian deems it a “surreal tourist draw” where visitors peer into the abyss from observation decks.
So join our exclusive Third Tunnel tour for a uniquely Korean experience you will not find anywhere else on the planet for an interactive history lesson frozen in time since 1953.
Itinerary
Myeongdong Subway Station
Our first meeting point is at Myeongdong Subway Station Exit 9, located in front of Sky Park Hotel Ⅲ (3). Please try to arrive 15 minutes early to avoid any delays.
Seoul City Hall Subway Station
Meet us at City Hall Subway Station Exit 6. Exit 6 is located beside the Plaza Hotel. Please aim to get there 15 minutes before your scheduled pickup time.
Hongik University Station
Meet outside Hongik University (Hongdae) Subway Station Exit 4 (between AK Plaza and Shake Shack). Please try to arrive at least 15 minutes early.
Imjingak Pyeonghwa Nuri Park
Feel the breeze sweep through Imjingak Pyeonghwa Nuri Park as thousands of colorful unification ribbons flutter overhead like a living sky of wishes. This peaceful hillside is the closest point most Koreans will ever reach to their lost northern homes, where hope hangs in the air, and the dream of one Korea feels almost within reach. Here, we will have some time to explore the park while your guide obtains your entrance clearance for the restricted areas of the DMZ.
Bridge of Freedom
Stand on the creaking wooden planks where 13,000 freed POWs took their first steps south in 1953, tears streaming as they crossed the Imjin. Look north through barbed wire and imagine their joy and sorrow echoing beneath your feet.
Mangbaedan
Kneel at the stone altar where displaced families once bowed northward on New Year’s Day, tears falling for homes they could see but never reach. Incense lingers in the air, carrying decades of longing across an invisible line.
Imjin River Dokgae Bridge
Catch sight of the striking Dokgae Bridge across the Imjin River. This 1906 steel beauty was deliberately bombed by retreating South Korean forces in 1950 to halt the North’s advance, then lovingly rebuilt as a poignant symbol of division and quiet hope. Please note that the Skywalk experience is not included in this tour, though an entrance ticket can be purchased on-site for a small fee if you wish.
Steam Locomotive at Jangdan Station
Touch the cold, rusted flank of a steam engine frozen since 1951, hammered by over 1,020 bullet holes from the war that stranded it forever inside the DMZ. Hear the silence where whistles once screamed.
Pyeonghwauijong The Peace Bell
Grab the thick rope and swing the massive log striker. Feel the deep bronze boom of the Millennium Peace Bell roll across the valley toward North Korea, carrying your own wish for reunion in its waves.
Unification Bridge
Roll slowly through the military checkpoint as soldiers inspect passports, then cross the guarded Unification Bridge. The last civilian span before the true DMZ lies ahead on the road that symbolically points to Pyongyang (North Korea’s capital). Keep an eye out for various wildlife, including endangered species, as you cross the Imjin River.
The Third Tunnel of Aggression
Put on your hard hat and descend 73 meters into damp darkness. The 1.6 km Third Tunnel of Aggression (also known as the Third Infiltration Tunnel) is one of 4 known tunnels North Korea dug to allow 30,000 soldiers per hour to reach Seoul (only 44km away). Descending into the underground 2-meter-wide passage grips you with the claustrophobic chill of a secret invasion route discovered just in time. The Third Tunnel was found in 1978 after a North Korean defector revealed its location. It was painted black with fake coal dust to disguise it as a mine and was built for a lightning-fast invasion of Seoul.
DMZ Theater & Exhibition Hall
Step inside the modern hall and let dramatic footage surround you in the immersive theater, recreating the raw intensity of the Korean War. Then wander exhibits packed with declassified maps, soldier artifacts, and rare photos, including the actual dynamite drills used to carve the infiltration tunnels. History feels alive and urgent here.
Dora Observatory
Step onto the observation platform and press your eyes to powerful binoculars, and suddenly, North Korea is right in front of you. On a clear day, you can see North Korea’s Kijong-dong, the eerie “Propaganda Village” built in the 1950s with empty buildings and blaring loudspeakers to lure defectors. You can also catch a glimpse of everyday life beyond the barbed wire, including North Korean farmers tilling fields by hand and villagers walking along narrow paths. Take in Gwangbong Hill, crowned by a towering bronze statue of Kim Il-sung, and the real city of Kaesong standing tall in the background, with smoke rising from real factories, making for a haunting, living window into another world and a surreal, unforgettable glimpse into the divided peninsula.
Tongilchon Jangdankong Maeul
Step into peaceful Tongilchon, an authentic village tucked inside the DMZ buffer zone where residents live just meters from the border. Snap photos of quiet streets and soybean fields, cool off with creamy handmade soybean ice cream, and browse the village shop for unique local souvenirs grown in this extraordinary corner of Korea. Please note this is the last restroom stop before heading back to Seoul.
JSA Museum
This exclusive JSA Experience at the JSA Museum is reserved solely for our tour guests. One of only two agencies with privileged access, your visit offers unrestricted entry to explore immersive exhibits, rare historical photos, war archives, multimedia displays, and perfectly recreated T2/T3 conference rooms. These vividly bring to life the dramatic story of Panmunjom and the Joint Security Area. Enjoy an in-depth, interactive insight unmatched by any standard 3rd Tunnel DMZ tour. A rare, thrilling finale you won’t find elsewhere.
North Korean Defector Live Talk (Meeting + Q&A)
(Optional) Hear real stories firsthand from a North Korean defector in a live session for just our group. Ask questions and get a deeper insight beyond that of a regular DMZ tour from Seoul. This unique experience is a must for a truly memorable and complete experience. To participate, you must book this in advance. You cannot upgrade to include this option on the day!
Gamaksan Red Suspension Bridge
(Optional) Step onto Korea’s longest towerless suspension bridge, swaying 150 meters above the valley with wind whistling through the open floor. Opened in 2017 on the old Korean War frontline where fierce battles raged in 1950-53, this thrilling span (also known as the Gloucester Heroes Bridge) honors the 1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment of the British Army, who heroically held Gloucester Hill against overwhelming Chinese forces, earning the U.S. Presidential Unit Citation for their stand. Overlooking the Civilian Control Zone and distant DMZ watchtowers, it transforms a former battlefield into a breathtaking symbol of peace and daring adventure.
Central Seoul Drop-off (Hongdae, Seoul City Hall, Myeongdong)
Hop off at one of our centrally located drop-off locations (Hongdae, Seoul City Hall, or Myeongdong) in central Seoul. Continue exploring a unique vibe, indulge in a delicious meal, or take advantage of the plentiful transportation options at each location for onward travel or easy access back to your hotel.
